International Union of Pharmacology XLIV. Nomenclature for the oxoeicosanoid receptor.

Oxoeicosanoids are a family of biologically active arachidonic acid derivatives that have been intimately linked with cellular migration. These metabolites are not only potent chemotaxins but also elicit oxygen radical production as well as induce secretory events in different cells. The most potent native ligand reported is 5-oxo-6,8,11,14-eicosatetraenoic acid (5-oxo-ETE), and the cell membra...

Glacier surge mechanism: 1982-1983 surge of variegated glacier, alaska.

The hundredfold speedup in glacier motion in a surge of the kind the kind that took place in Variegated Glacier in 1982-1983 is caused by the buildup of high water pressure in the basal passageway system, which is made possible by a fundamental and pervasive change in the geometry and water-transport characteristics of this system. The behavior of the glacier in surge has many remarkable featur...

Holocene glacier fluctuations

A global overview of glacier advances and retreats (grouped by regions and by millennia) for the Holocene is compiled from previous studies. The reconstructions of glacier fluctuations are based on 1) mapping and dating moraines defined by 14C, TCN, OSL, lichenometry and tree rings (discontinuous records/time series), and 2) sediments from proglacial lakes and speleothems (continuous records/ t...

Rheology of glacier ice.

A new method for calculating the stress field in bounded ice shelves is used to compare strain rate and deviatoric stress on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The analysis shows that strain rate (per second) increases as the third power of deviatoric stress (in newtons per square meter), with a constant of proportionality equal to 2.3 x 10(-25).

Interstellar Grains

Overview Submicron solid particles are dispersed through interstellar gas. These interstellar grains absorb and scatter light, thus shielding some regions from ultraviolet radiation, but also limiting our ability to detect photons which have been emitted by astronomical objects. Dust grains reradiate absorbed energy in the in-frared, thus contributing to the overall emission spectrum of astrono...
